8.10 The Dharma Metamorphosis Results from Errors

The One of Great-Enlightenment Supreme-Will has fully understood that the UNCONSCIOUSNESS has no root, contrarily, it has the source, because it results from the living beings' ego. Therefore, He has determinedly directed living beings to leave their ego and to rely on the non-ego to seek for the great truth, relying on hundreds of rivers gradually to flow into the vast sea.” Speaking on this point, the Meditation Master likely appears in contemplation then laments with Himself: “How difficult the way to the True Enlightenment is. I myself have experienced through countless endless extreme straits and now arrive at the vast sea, but it is hard to show the way to all living beings while they are still wandering in the dream and still not awake. My strength is the strength of the immense ocean, whereas effortful deeds of living beings are just like the water foam floating on the waves with the wind.

—T. V.

Unconsciousness has no root; as if, it had the root, the Dharma practice would never lead to enlightenment. Contrarily, the unconsciousness has the source instead. Why?

Because of the originated condition generating the mind, that is the source of unconsciousness. Once the mind is generated, the mind then has its own nature that is the source of unconsciousness. That nature must have its consciousness that is the source of unconsciousness. Consciousness is lively and flexible in ceaseless motion. That’s why when a person, whether a Tao practitioner or a non-practitioner, who wishes for their consciousness to be halted and clung, it becomes karma. That is just the source of unconsciousness in the four periods erroneously to be embraced and attached to accept being the living being precepts. A Tao practitioner with clear awareness, neither embracing attachment nor clinging, will reach the attainment with level by level, whether high or low, complete or incomplete, so that they can clearly understand the source of unconsciousness. Once knowing thoroughly that due to karma, the source of unconsciousness is formed, a Tao practtioner must penetrate deeply in Dharma precepts until they reach the true acquirement, then immediately finish off the source of unconsciousness. Consciousness here is the spiritual consciousness; the spiritual consciousness is the thought that frequently clings and attaches to the possessive ego of the conscious idea creating the karma.

Therefore, a Tao practitioner, at first, needs to seek for the procedure to resolve karma or to search out a master who has fully attained the Bodhisattva path to guide them in resolving karma, only then starts on practicing. Karma is incalculable and thus called hundreds of rivers with many directions and aspects; it’s extremely clever and delicate. Many Tao practitioners still have consciousness karma but do not know what the consciousness karma is. They, therefore, are readily duped by it, claiming themselves to be somebody —that’s really erroneous and eternally disastrous. Only after clearly resolving all karmas, a Tao practitioner is able to return to the Supreme Truth, that is called arrive at the vast sea.

Overcoming straits means overcoming harsh circumstances; the more the karma is resolved, the more the Buddhist intelligence can develop and the more the precious Dharma is received. While living beings use efforts of learning through literature, studying without knowing how to practice on resolving karma, that are just like the water foam floating on the waves, impossible to reach the goal of enlightenment. Enduring and overcoming countless thorny straits, that is extremely difficult, called the strength of ocean becoming the Buddha. Profoundly acquiring it, that is the Bodhisattva.

After lamenting with Himself, the Meditation Master conducts His true mindfulness to communicate with the Buddhas of Ten Directions, shaking the Three Postures. The Buddhas unanimously ordain the Meditation Master’s wholehearted words communicating. Afterward, the Meditation Master expounds: “To old acquaintances, great humans of great will, you are practicing the Dharma, seeking for the way of parallel cultivation – appearing enlightenment, you have never met Me yet, but now you are meeting Me. Anywhere significant, provided that you could recognize the truth in an enlightened preaching to practice, we are of old acquaintance, and now we are meeting. Whereas, even meeting together and living in the same place, if you were lazy, tardy, and coward, though reciting the sutra you could not perceive Me at all. What a big waste to spend your whole life without constructing. —T. V.

For the one who has resolved all karmas, they can communicate with the Buddhas of Ten Directions even just by one newly generated thought. As for the Truly Enlightened One like Reverend Long-Hoa Sangha Chief, Supreme Maitreya Buddha, every arisen thought is a true mindfulness, which immediately shakes the Three Postures and communicates with the Buddhas.

The old acquaintances, great humans of great will are precisely the great Bodhisattvas who have practiced, relied on the moving consciousness, which are the moving Dharmas of the spiritual consciousness. For a Tao practitioner with high dignity, the conscious idea is the clinging to the consciousness without being attached. That is the Bodhisattva who is clinging, but without clinging. It is by doing so that he knows how to resolve the source of unconsciousness of the consciousness. The profounder one, like the Great Bodhisattva, knows fully and thoroughly the characteristics of consciousness, profoundly acquiring the ‘Self-Nature, Awareness of Nature’ in his practice, not relying on the consciousness to cling on to and embrace attachment in the consciousness. If embracing attachment, one naturally practicing the Dharma merely for the title of Dharma practice will only reach to a certain limit. Need to rely on the non-ego to seek for the true ego — those are the Tao practitioners of old acquaintance in the past, who are meeting together now in Long-Hoa to receive enlightened preachings to practice.

All the Patriarchs, including the Fairies’ and Deities’ Patriarchs in the time of The Founding Master Shakyamuni Buddha, assembled adequately at Long-Hoa. Now, they have been reborn in Vietnam. The majority of them, reaching the level of Arahant, Sravaka, and Pratyeka, were in the straits of consciousness, being in difficulty to resolve. As if they were willing to overcome, the Lord would continue to open Dharmas for them; otherwise, only relying on the reciting of sutra, they would be at a standstill, clinging, being mistaken and thus in Dharma metamorphosis.

To all of you, the old acquaintances, now I tell you: look with me at the endless relative-emptiness, at the mountains and rivers living along with us. I am myself seeking for the enlightenment direction. Through the Self-Nature in myself, I resolve unconscious attachments; exterminating the ego, in the theory and act of the Dharma practice, I am together with you treading it under our foot crushingly. But it has persisted through millions of lifetimes, including human lives, Divine Fairy lives, or being reborn in the animal world, or becoming devils and ghosts in the interminable fall and rise. For that reason, the Buddhas and Saints last forever while living beings are constantly changing, when is there an end between Buddha and living beings? While seeking for enlightenment, they are being in unconsciousness; in the unconsciousness, they perceive the enlightenment. How strange it is, there is higher pride in the Saint’s position and depraved in the living being’s position. How difficult it is, the practice for tranquility is caught with the unrestful mind. The correction of mistakes gives rise to bad habits. —T. V.

Speaking to those of old acquaintance, the Lord is expressing His confidences to Tao practitioners who determinedly seek for True Enlightenment, belonging to the Bodhisattva rank. Looking at the endless relative-emptiness is looking at whatever scenes of thousands of Dharmas evolving without attachment and without objection; and with a clear mind to clearly understand Dharma, just like to look at the immense, imposing mountains and rivers to make the mind generous and tolerant, not attached to any Dharma. As for the theory and act, which require daily practice in order to tread Dharma precepts crushingly. Otherwise, any form of practice is still prolonged to millions of lifetimes. Being excellent in theory without knowing the harmful effects of embracing the seeds of bad karma, even whoever they are, after departing from life they will receive retribution as a kind of buffalo, cow, horse... That is disastrous. Those who are cruel will become ghosts, devils, demons, that is their right path. Therefore, the Buddha and living beings are separately millions of miles away. Living beings practice the Dharma in tranquility, thereby being entangled in the isolating tranquility, that is still an unrestful mind, clinging in disastrous emptiness. And correcting the mistake without knowing the characteristic of consciousness karma is still to carry the disease of too big ego, that also is an accumulated tranquility, not in bright righteousness. If a Tao practitioner has not completely resolved their karma, but regards themselves as a Saint, they are being highly arrogant. On the contrary, when they admit themselves as an ordinary person without realizing that they are receiving karma, they are being depraved — that is a matter of course.

The Lord says: “How wonderful it is! The nature, the mountains and rivers, the vegetation, the sky, the cloud and Myself are simply one: Combination and transformation – Similar sounds responding to one another – The appearing enlightenment. Whereas human beings believe that human beings and the vegetation-mountains-rivers are two. That is extremely erroneous.”

At that time, the Ancient Buddha Adi already had the essential nature equal to the mountains, rivers, and the universe. Therefore, the Lord frequently enters into True Meditation to observe and control all over. The Lord says: “My eyes see the relative-emptiness; I put My body into the infinite relative-emptiness. I no longer see the relative-emptiness, but thoroughly understand the relative-emptiness. That is the Enlightenment about Form. I get in and out of thousands of Dharmas without predetermined pollution. I have not yet seen how thousands of Dharmas evolve; but I recognize thousands of Dharmas naturally evolving. That is, I perceive the suchness of the essential nature of thousands of Dharmas.” —T. V.

One day, after entering into True Meditation, the Meditation Master intuitively comprehended the mystery of the universe. He then wrote these things down, which at first glance seem simple but if carefully examining, it’s really profound and fully marvellous:

The humans and Four Species comprise the Four Masses—soil, water, wind, and fire, which are combining and forming their body. The vegetation, mineral ... are also combined and formed from the Four Masses.

Soil: trunks, branches, and leaves.

Water: breaking a branch or crumpling a leaf would show a liquid.

Wind: the circulation of the chyliferous sap along the branch and leaf to nourish the plant.

Fire: the high or low temperature of the plant.

Soil: The dense substance of a block of stone, clay, …

Water: It becomes wet when immersing it in water, indicating it contains water.

Wind: It becomes broken when smashing it, indicating it contains wind.

Fire: It becomes hot when burning it, indicating it contains fire.

Mountains, rivers, continents, ... belong to the material that also contains spirit: If we take a log, a stone or clay to create a statue of Buddha, Saint, or Deity,... for praying and supplicating, after a while, there also has the corresponding supernatural efficacy. Therefore, the mountains, rivers, continents ... also have spirit and supernaturally efficacious nature. This supernatural efficacy is corresponding to the nature and the sincerity of the prayer. Therefore, under the Meditation Master's eyes, the human beings and the mountains, the rivers, the continents, the sky, the clouds ..., that is, the humans and the universe, are one.

Human beings have knowledge after enough organs are combined and formed. Vegetation also has the knowledge to nourish and grow the plant; it knows how to develop its leaves, flowers and fruits. It has also its longevity according to its species. Human longevity is about 70 or 80, up to 100 years each lifetime. The stone and the soil also have their knowledge as it produces insects and organisms of all species on earth according to the environment and condition of the temperature. In the water, there are countless fishes and organisms produced as well. In the air, there are also countless bacteria produced. How wonderful it is! The nature, the mountain, the river, the vegetation, the sky, the cloud, and ourself, are ONE; suitable substances are combined and transformed and thus appearing correspondingly.

The eyes seeing the relative-emptiness means the seeing of the natural evolution of thousands of Dharmas, it is not by anyone’s hand to create the mountain, river and continent. I integrate My body into the infinite relative-emptiness means I bring my entire body and mind to observe carefully the evolution of the mountain, the river, the continent, the vegetation, the cloud and water. I no longer see the relative-emptiness, but thoroughly understand the relative-emptiness; that means, though entering into the mountain, river, and continent, knowing the natural combination and transformation of thousands of Dharmas, but I do not see myself in it, rather thoroughly understand the combination and transformation, which produce the universe.

That is the Enlightenment-about-Form of thousands of Dharmas; the characteristic of each and everything is due to how it is combined, it transforms accordingly. Reaching the truly entire knowledge, we no longer have ourself. We and the nature, the mountain, the river, the vegetation, the sky and the cloud are one. Thence, we witness the essential nature of thousands of Dharmas naturally evolving.

The mountain, the river, the continent, the earth, the vegetation, and the total of things naturally evolve. This evolution belongs to the essential nature, which is naturally transformed, spontaneously transformed, by itself. It harmonizes with all living beings and Four Species, which also naturally evolve without error and difference.
